Egypt is one of my favorite places to visit! The country is filled with so much culture, more than words could explain! Half of the country is Islamic and the other half is Christian, with all people coexisting peacefully. The best time to visit Egypt is in the fall, when the temperatures are much cooler. During the summer months, Egypt could reach 100+ degrees Fahrenheit. It is not uncommon that most Egyptians avoid coming out during the day in these heated conditions. Be mindful, some sites may be closed if there is a heat advisory, so it is important to check in with tour guides before commuting to desired sites. Staying hydrated is of great importance while navigating the country. Contrary to popular belief, I felt extremely safe during my entire visit. Like any given country, you should always be aware of your surroundings!

All about the stay:

My first visit to Egypt in April 2018, I stayed in Barcelo Cairo Pyramids Hotel. The rooms were clean, good Wi-Fi throughout, and staff were friendly. This hotel is located about eight minutes from the Great Pyramids of Giza. I cannot speak much about the food, as I did not eat at the hotel, however, my friend believes she got food poisoning from eating breakfast at the hotels’ restaurant. During my second stay, I stayed at the Le Meridien Pyramids. The views were AMAZING! The Giza pyramids were right outside my window. This property was more upscale, with great food and a resort style swimming pool. There are many shops and cafes within the hotel, and an affordable spa to take great advantage. The staff were friendly and kind, and even delivered a birthday cake to our room with candles, free of charge! There are a few good restaurants within walking distance from the property.

Getting Around Egypt

I am a shameless plug for great service. I first met my driver Magdy by luck in April 2018, the first time I went to Cairo. Me and my girlfriend ordered a taxi from the hotel concierge to go and get dinner at some restaurant the hotel recommended. Magdy showed up and asked us where we wanted to go, and we told him the restaurant name. He turned and looked at us and told us, “That place is no good! I will take you if you really want to go, but I recommend some place better.” Being two young women, late at night, in a country we could not understand the language, of course we were skeptical. However, Magdy reassured us by showing us his tourism license and credentials. Since that night, he picked us up every day and took us to “must see sites.” Upon my departure from Cairo, I told Magdy I would be back, and fortunate enough, I was able to return in July 2019. He greeted me at the airport with flowers, and continued to be at my beck and call the entire duration of my trip. 10/10 recommend getting a personal driver whilst your time in Cairo. Most drivers are also licensed to conduct tours. I rather give my money to one driver who provides excellent service during my entire time in the country. In 2018, Magdy promised that the next time I visit Egypt, I have to enjoy a dinner that his wife will prepare. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I returned the following year, and he did not forget his promise! His wife prepared a delicious Egyptian feast! They welcomed me into their home and made my second trip in Egypt one to never forget! I am forever indebted to Magdy's kindness and hospitality! I now have a forever friend and brother in Cairo!

What to do

Egypt is enriched with culture. Cairo, the capital of Egypt is set on the ancient Nile River. Some must see sites include: The Egyptian Museum (expect to spend between 3-4 hours here), the Coptic museum, the Great Pyramids of Giza, The Great Sphinx, Saqqara Pyramid, Citadel Fortress, and the hanging church.

Luxor, is home to the Valley of the Kings and Queens, and a must-see location! A day trip from Cairo to Luxor costs around $500-$600 (includes short flight, lunch, and admission into the site, and lasts about 14-15 hours). While in Luxor, visiting the Luxor Museum, and the Mummification Museum, and taking a hot air balloon ride above the Nile River are also highlights.

Sharm El-Sheikh is where most Egyptians recommend all tourists to visit. Egyptians spend their holidays here in this resort town along the Red Sea. Sharm El-Sheikh is known for their deep diving, coral reefs, bars and restaurants. Busiest time of the year is June-September where this town is filled with both Egyptians and tourists alike.

Tips:

- Fresh mango juice/smoothies are heaven sent

- The standard for gold is 18K. Take care of all your jewelry needs!

- Connect with a tour guide/driver for all desired activities

- Coffee shops are the best place to unwind and enjoy Shisha (Hookah)

- Find a trusted perfume shop to purchase fragrances

- Bring a student ID to get discounts on some tour tickets

- Never trust anyone who wants to give you something for free, or offer to take a photo of you and your friends (you will be pressured to give money for the favor)

- Always negotiate prices while shopping (The Bazaar shops are overpriced)

- Always use bottled water

- Like any popular touristic location, keep your belongings close to your body
